Digital Temperature Settings 101: What Number Should You Actually Use?
Most people either crank their straightener to the highest setting out of habit, or leave the dial wherever it landed last time. Neither is doing your hair any favours. The right temperature depends on your hair type, and getting it wrong is one of the fastest ways to cause damage without even realizing it's happening.
Why one fixed temperature is the wrong approach
Hair changes. Humidity, colour treatments, time since your last trim, even the season, all affect how your hair responds to heat. A setting that worked perfectly in December might be too aggressive in July, or too weak to hold a style at all. Treating temperature as a "set it and forget it" number is where most heat damage actually starts.
Temperature by hair type
- Fine or damaged hair: 250°F to 300°F. Fine strands have less mass to protect them from heat, so they need the gentlest setting that still gets the job done.
- Medium, normal hair: 300°F to 350°F. This is the range most people land in, and it's a safe starting point if you're not sure which category you fall into.
- Thick or coarse hair: 350°F to 400°F. Thicker strands need more heat to style effectively, but that doesn't mean maxing out the dial. Work up from the bottom of this range first.
- Chemically treated or coloured hair: Stay under 300°F regardless of texture. Colour and chemical treatments already stress the hair shaft, so this group needs the gentlest approach even if their natural texture is thick.
